The Breed: The breed characteristics of Beefalo are what impressed us, and they are:
Foraging ability: Beefalos are extremely good foragers, being far less selective in what they eat than domestic cattle, and efficiently converting roughage to weight gain.
Hybrid vigour: These cattle are made up of 3/8 Bison and 5/8 domestic cattle, the resulting calves having genetic strengths and improved hybrid vigour.
Meat attributes: The eating qualities of Beefalo meat are excellent and it is considered to be one of the leanest, having lower levels of both total fats and saturated fats, and lower cholesterol.
Excellent mothering ability: Beefalo females are extremely protective of their calves. Their milk is rich and the calves gain weight rapidly.
Climatic change: Bison survive extremely harsh climatic conditions, having 2 to 5 times more hair follicles per sq.cm. than domestic cattle and this trait is of course seen in the Beefalo. Also, their ability to sweat makes them adaptable to hot conditions.
Any base breed can be used: Any domestic cattle breed may be used, together with 3/8 Bison, to produce Beefalo. This means that the Beefalo can be any colour, and either horned or polled.
